GetConnected TV - reviews S&T 2007 with GPS locator

GetConnected is the ultimate guide to getting your business connected with technology. Each week host Mike Agerbo and co-hosts AJ Vickery and Yolande Lougheed take a look at what's hot and why.

On YouTube this week is their review of Streets & Trips 2007 with GPS locator. They give it high marks...just think if they had reviewed the soon to be released S&T 2008 with Connected Services. Open-mouthed

Above The Fog - Test Drive Microsoft Streets & Trips

The first time Streets & Trips saved my life (ok, slight exaggeration here) was back in 2005.  I was driving in some of the thickest fog imaginable.  Visibility was poor - street signs were next to impossible to read and I was so thankful to have S&T tracking my route so I knew when to turn.

Here is a video of someone using S&T in the fog:

The Drivers are here! The Drivers are here!

The wait for the Vista 64bit drivers is over.

If you are running the 64-bit version of Vista you can now use the S&T GPS hardware.  Simply plug in the puck and follow prompt to search for driver.  Alternatively, you can check for updates on WindowsUpdate and you'll be prompted to download the driver.

3 easy ways to customize your route

The routing engine in Streets & Trips does a great job in providing the best route for your travels. However, you don't necessarily need to accept the default route the application provides. Occassionally users may wish to tweak the route and here are 3 ways to do that.

[Note: these techniques work for all versions of Streets & Trips.]
    1. Change your Routing Options:
Under the "Route" menu choose "More Options..." then go to the Segments tab.  can provide the 'quickest' (default) or the 'shortest'route between the given points.  There is also options that allow you to customize it by telling it what types of roads you like to drive on.  For example - If you put in that you dislike Toll Roads it will avoid using them it the route.
    2. The Ol' Click'n'Drag technique:
Click on the default route given on the map.  The entire route will change color to indicate the route has been selected.  Now use your mouse to drag any segment of the route to a new road and release.
    3. Use "Avoid Area" and recalculate route:
This is one of my favorites and yet I often find users who don't know about it.   I like that it DOESN'T ADD AN EXTRA WAYPOINT and keeps the spoken instructions simple and easy to follow.
