Day 1 for the Microsoft Connector Bus Service

The Connector is a new transportation service launched by the Microsoft® Connections Transportation Program.  It carries employees from their residential neighborhoods to the Redmond, Wash., campus.  Today was the first day.

I rode in to work today on the connector and enjoyed the stress-free commute.   The coach was a full size rig with plenty of cool features including:

    • bike racks
    • Wi-Fi connectivity (2 routers, no connection problems, seemed to be stable and have plenty of bandwidth)
    • AC power ports

They even handed out some goodies today to all the riders (stainless steel traveler tumbler and compact umbrella).
The Connector service will result in 20,000 fewer cars per month and 240,000 fewer cars per year on the road.
The Connector will eliminate approximately 3,800 tons of carbon emissions annually.

By providing a convenient option for commuting to work, The Connector will eliminate approximately 800 vehicle trips and 32,200 miles of travel each day, significantly curbing greenhouse gas emissions.

NotebookReview.com Reviews Streets and Trips 2008

Kevin O'Brien reviews Streets & Trips 2008 with Connected Services

    • "tracking your current location, viewing local gas prices, or routing a trip across the country is incredibly easy"
    • "Microsoft Streets and Trips 2008 is a solid update to the past software, with some nice enhancements of both software and hardware. The new Location Based services add in good live data to help make travel more enjoyable (and cheaper), and the highly sensitive GPS receiver helps the driver track their location even under dense cover. My only hope is the live traffic data through FM becomes more complete for certain regions, if the same data exists through other mapping programs."   [ link to full review on Notebookreview.com]

Do I need to upgrade my Connected Services firmware?

The boxes of Streets & Trips 2008 are finally hitting the shelves.  If you are splurging for the premium Connected Services version you may notice the option to update your firmware.

Do I need to upgrade my Connected Services firmware?

No. The firmware version shipped in the MSN Direct receiver (v.801.1.0)  is the same as what is available on the download center.  If you do update the firmware - you'll end up with the same thing - no harm done.

How do I check my firmware version?

The firmware version is shown at the bottom of the MSN Direct receiver dialog.
Tools --> Options --> Connected Services Tab --> Click <Configure MSN Direct Receiver> button

The update option will be nice down the road (no pun intended) when firmware updates are made available by the MSN Direct team.
